Looking back to 2010…

In 2010 Fit4Kids was a vision to transform the Richmond region into a community where children view physical activity and nutrition as a natural way of life. We didn’t have an office. We didn’t have any programs. We didn’t know where this vision would take us.

Our first Program Manager (and Fit4Kids’ first staff member) Rachel Harms, spent her first year researching best practices and doing a needs assessment to see what might work for us here in Richmond. With support from the Robins Foundation, SportsBackers, and the major health systems of the region, Fit4Kids went from a vision to what we are today.

Flash forward to 2016

Fit4Kids is comprised of 7 full time staff members, 2 part time staff, and anywhere from 2-4 interns a semester (we like to keep busy!). Fit4Kids also convenes the Greater Richmond Coalition for Healthy Children, a coalition formed with partners and stakeholders who are interested and invested in creating a healthier generation of Richmonders. With the help of our funders, partners, and volunteers we are happy to have innovative programs like Wellness Integration, Learning Gardens, Eat Fresh RPS, Food ExplorersSafe Routes to School, and the Prescription Produce Program. Not only are we now doing direct programming in the Richmond region, we’ve also expanded our reach to include Hopewell and Petersburg, serving over 7,000 children last year. We’ve found that helping children form healthy habits at an early age may just help fight this obesity epidemic. We’re excited to see what comes in the next 6 years!

Celebrate With Us!

There are so many ways you can help us celebrate this month!

-Volunteer with us for HandsOn Day, Saturday, October 15, 2016! Fit4Kids will host 3 HandsOn Day sites in the greater Richmond area. Volunteers will assist with garden maintenance and campus beautification efforts in 3 Fit4Kids Learning Gardens. There’s still time to sign up! Register to volunteer with the biggest day of service in Richmond here!

-Fit4Kids’ Board of Young Professionals is hosting our 2nd Annual Eat & Greet: Transforming Schoolyards on Sunday, October 16, 2016.  Local foodies, community activists, and green thumbs will gather at Pasture to enjoy a learning garden inspired meal!  You can purchase tickets on Eventbrite. All proceeds will benefit Greater Richmond Fit4Kids.

-Join us for the 2016 Make a Difference Day 5k hosted by The Pediatric Connection.  Run, eat, enjoy live music, raffles, games, and more with us on Saturday, October 22, 2016!  All proceeds from the event will benefit Greater Richmond Fit4Kids.  Sign up to run, sponsor a runner, or volunteer here.

-Want to help introduce kids to new and delicious fruits and veggies?  Volunteer for Richmond Public Schools Fruit and Veggie Week October 24th-28th.  Volunteers will pass out a variety of fruits and vegetables during lunch and hopefully the kiddos will find some new favorite healthy snacks!

Please consider donating in honor of our birthday.  We’ve grown so much since 2010 and, with support from community members, we can continue to grow and serve Richmond’s youngest residents!
