Through a Healthy Community Action Team grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, the Greater Richmond Coalition for Healthy Children and Fit4Kids are partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Richmond Teens Center Club to offer a cooking and nutrition education program to youth after school. The cooking classes, taught by Edible Education chefs, provide weekly lessons in preparing healthy meals and hands-on learning about fresh, seasonal food. The program started on October 2nd and will run for eight weeks. Youth have prepared a number of delicious and healthy meals including huevos con burritos, fruit smoothies, seasonal vegetables, and healthy blueberry pancakes. Chefs also incorporate nutrition information into the classes and have taught lessons on portion sizes and the importance of breakfast. A number of youth have taken these learnings and recipes home and shared them with their families. We look forward to our next lesson with the Edible Education chefs and the youth at the Boys and Girls Club on October 23rd!
