The Fit4Kids Healthy Futures Fellowship is a paid, school-year position for recent graduates, career changers, or anyone eager to make a difference in education and public health. This is your chance to build skills, work directly with kids, and get hands-on experience in schools and communities across the Richmond region.
Greater Richmond Fit4Kids will have 9 Fellows who will lead nutrition education and physical activity opportunities and encouragement at Fit4Kids programs in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Petersburg. These programs include school and community garden education, Learn to Ride bike program, ‘Game on, Girl!’ after school sessions, recess coaching, nutrition education, and Fit4Kids community engagement activities. You will lead students in a variety of activities by helping them build healthy habits for life. This is a terrific opportunity for someone who loves the outdoors and education and is looking for an exciting year of learning and growth.
Two of the 9 fellows will work directly with Learn to Ride programming, helping 1st and 2nd graders in Richmond learn to ride a bike!
This is a 9-month commitment from early September 2025 to end of May 2026:
- The fellows will complete a minimum of 1000 hours of service during this 9 month period, roughly 30 hours per week paid $12.50/hour.
- Upon satisfactory progress, Fellows will receive a mid-year stipend of $750.
Professional Development:
As a Fit4Kids Healthy Futures Fellow, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and benefit from robust professional development opportunities. Fellows will participate in regular training sessions focused on leadership, youth development, and community engagement.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead hands-on in-person lessons that integrate the garden into the core, standards-based curriculum
- Maintain communication between Fit4Kids staff, school staff, teachers, and volunteers
- Collect and enter data for various program evaluation requirements to ensure program effectiveness
- Assist with some greenhouse duties such as planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, and more!
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old by the start of service and have a high school diploma
- Must satisfactorily pass a background check
- Must be able to commit to the full term of service, and meet the minimum number of service hours required by the program.
- A great attitude, willingness to learn, and strong communications skills.
- Fellows must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which will include outdoor activities like gardening, bike riding, or recess facilitation.
- Fellows must be comfortable being outside for hours at a time.
- Fellows should be passionate about working with children and youth, promoting physical activity, and fostering healthy eating habits.
- Must be proficient with, or open to learning on a quick curve, Google Drive and email
- Access to reliable transportation as you will have to visit 10 schools across Richmond.
Benefits: Upon satisfactory progress, Fellows will receive a mid-year stipend of $750
