In partnership with Martin’s Food Markets, the Greater Richmond Coalition for Healthy Children launched the healthy checkout aisles initiative in August 2012 to promote healthy food choices in grocery stores through environmental changes.
At eight Martin’s stores in the region, two check-out aisles have been designated “Healthy Ideas” lanes and contain food items such as fresh fruit, nuts, nutrition bars, and flavored water.
Results from 1500 Martin’s customer surveys indicate the lanes were frequently used to avoid unhealthy impulse purchases and deter children from asking for junk food. Coalition members presented findings at a plenary session at Weight of the State in April 2013. To learn more, watch the video below from the Coalition’s presentation at Weight of the State.
