Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving children’s health and reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity in the Richmond region. We do this by offering innovative programs that promote physical activity and healthy eating in schools, community organizations, and beyond.
In 2010, there was no regional organization focused exclusively on preventing childhood obesity. To fill that void, Sports Backers launched Fit4Kids with the support from the Robins Foundation, and we’ve been on a roll ever since. In 2012, Fit4Kids launched its first school-based programs at five elementary schools in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. In the 2015-16 school year, Fit4Kids reached more than 7,500 children in the region with our Learning Garden and Wellness Integration Programs. Fit4Kids also launched the Eat Fresh RPS initiative in collaboration with RPS and the Richmond City Health District. As part of this initiative, we installed Garden Patch Salad Bars in 20 RPS schools, providing fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 9,000 students. In addition, Fit4Kids helped implement Safe Routes to School programming in five Richmond public schools. In an effort to combat the decline in physical activity of girls when they reach adolescence, we launched Game On, Girl! in 2017, a comprehensive initiative to empower girls to be physically active, nutritionally fit, and ready to take on the world. We’re excited to continue to expand our reach each year and encourage lifelong healthy habits for thousands of kids. Our vision is to continue to grow our programs, show success and sustainability, and to inspire schools and divisions to adopt and lead their own ongoing wellness programming.
